CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian military court on Sunday sentenced two Coptic Christians to five years in jail for violence and trying to turn a factory into an unlicensed church, judicial sources said.

The two men, also convicted of possessing weapons, were arrested on May 18 after clashes between Christians and Muslims in Cairo's Ain Shams district as the Copts planned to hold prayers in the building.

A Coptic-led group that took part in a reconciliation meeting between the two sides says the two men are innocent and their lawyers will try to appeal the ruling.

Sameh Abdel Satar, a member of the Egypt Lovers and Peace Society, said the Coptic Church had obtained permission in January to convert the building, which it had purchased in 2006, into a church.

"If you’re going to do a thing, you should do it thoroughly. If you’re going to be a Christian, you may as well be a Catholic."

Chinese youth make an appeal for World Youth Day in Madrid

Rome (AsiaNews) – Fifteen young Chinese Catholics would like to participate in World Youth Day scheduled for 16-21 August in Madrid (Spain). Although they work and have saved some money, they cannot sustain the cost of travel and for this reason would like to ask other young people around the world for their help.

AsiaNews received the appeal yesterday, a day before the World Day of Prayer for China, which Benedict XVI has promoted to strengthen the faith and the unity of Chinese Catholics with the universal Church and the pope.

The desire to travel to Madrid for World Youth Day is similarly motivated. “These young people live their faith in a very closed environment,” their parish priest said. “Meeting other young people who share their spirit as well as the Holy Father would be a fundamental experience of communion with the Church and of its universality.”

Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) will be celebrating 97th Anniversary

Source: AffordableCebu- "Said to be the true church built by Christ, Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC or Church of Christ) will be celebrating its 97th anniversary this July 27, 2011. According to INC members, this church was prophesied by Christ on the first century to reappear in ends of time which is our time. They believe that through the instrumentality of its "Sugo" or messenger of God, "Felix Manalo", the Iglesia Ni Cristo was established and officially registered in the Philippines on July 27, 1914. And in this date "July 27" is declared by the former President Arroyo to be one of the official holiday in the Philippines. That's how special this event is.

Forming a religious identity "without antagonism" in young Christians and Muslims

The Catholic Church is Reaching out to non-Christians and in particular the Muslims.  In Amman, Jordan the two faiths concluded a meeting between the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialouge and the Institute for the real inter-religious studies in the Jordanian capital city.  As concluded, both faiths have much values in common that should be highlighted and differences that must be respected.  -CD2000

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - Education, religious in particular, should not form identities in antagonism or in conflict, but on the contrary, while helping the youth to be well rooted in their own religious identity, it should favor the formation of identities open to other identities. This appears to have been the main focus of discussions in a meeting between the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Institute for the Amman based Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies (R.I.I.F.S.), held in Rome on "Human and religious values shared by Christians and Muslims for a common education. "

"Christians and Muslims - reads a statement released after the meeting - share basic human values like the sacred character of human life, human dignity and the fundamental inalienable rights deriving from it."

As for the religious values, “some of them are common to Christians and Muslims, meanwhile others are specific of each community. It is therefore important to point out commonalities and to identify differences. Respect for differences is in fact an important condition for an authentic dialogue”.

New bishop of Yanzhou ordained with Holy See approval

Bishop John Lu Peisen is the second legitimate pastor ordained since the beginning of the year. Two days ago the Pope's call to pray for the bishops who "suffer and are under pressure in exercising their episcopal ministry." Bishop Lu was a long time teacher at the seminary in Jinan.

Yanzhou (AsiaNews) – Msgr. John Lu Peisen was ordained today as bishop of Yanzhou (Shandong). Bishop Lu, who was a long time seminary professor is approved by the Holy See and the Chinese government. He is the second legitimate bishop ordained in China since the beginning of the year after Msgr. Liang Jiansen of Jiangmen. But just days ago, the honorary chairman of the Patriotic Association, Anthony Liu Bainian had promised ten episcopal ordinations without papal consent.

Bishop Lu’s ordination came two days after Benedict XVI’s call to observe the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China on May 24. In the appeal the Pope mentioned his “brother bishops” in China some of whom “suffer and find themselves under pressure in the exercise of their episcopal ministry.”

Bishop Fang Xinyao of Linyi, chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, was the main celebrant. Bishops Zhao Fengchang of Liaocheng, Li Mingshu of Qingdao, Yang Yongqiang of Zhoucun and Zhang Xianwang of Jinan concelebrated. All bishops present were legitimate.

Source: Air to the Church in Need - Ashur lssa Yaqub, a 29 year old working class citizen, was found dead by the police on Monday morning after being kidnapped Friday night. His body was badly mutilated and his hear severed after his poor family failed to pay the close to $100,000 ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

Violence against Christians is part of everyday life in Iraq. According to the Catholic Church, since 2004 a series of churches have been bombed, 7 priests killed and several bishops kidnapped.

Talking to the international Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the Chaldean-Catholic Archbishop of Kirkuk, Louis Sako, said that he admires the endurance and strong faith of the Christians in his parish despite the continued violence.

“In all these years I never heard of one single Christian who converted to Islam,” Sako stressed.

In contrast, Muslims often came to his church and asked to be baptized. “But I´m not allowed to baptize Muslims,” Sako said. “That´s no freedom of religion!”

Syria: Increasing pressure on Christians

SYRIA, Inspire - As demonstrations against the Syrian government intensify, Christians are coming under increasing pressure to join the uprising - or leave, reports Barnabas Fund.

In one Christian village outside the southern city of Deraa, a home came under fire by a group of masked men on motorbikes, while Muslim residents in the village of Hala have issued an ultimatum to their Christian neighbours – to join the demonstrations against President Bashar al-Assad's regime or to leave.

Their demands are making life difficult for the Christians, who have closed their shops and are considering what course of action to take. Churches have also received threatening letters.

Barnabas Fund is one of the very few Christian agencies working to assist the Christians in Syria, and has done so for many years. They are in particular need of humanitarian help now, with food prices rocketing as the country's economy is affected by the unrest.

Patriotic Association threatens 10 episcopal ordinations without papal mandate

Hong Kong (AsiaNew) - The honorary chairman of the Patriotic Association, Anthony Liu Bainian has demanded that the Vatican “not interfere with the self-election and self-ordination” of bishops, [ie without papal mandate-ed] and recognize and support the elected bishops in their work of evangelization. Bishops: We would rather go to jail than give up promoting life

Manila, Philippines, PhilStar - Some Catholic prelates yesterday said that they would rather go to jail on charges of sedition than give up their campaign to promote life.

The statement was made in reaction to President Aquino’s threats that the anti-Reproductive Health (RH) bill groups who encourage civil disobedience through non-payment of taxes may face sedition or rebellion charges.

He can put us all in jail. We are willing to pay the price to save the unborn from modern Herods and save the executioners from the grasp of the evil one, Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles told CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Collin Bagaforo said Amen! We obey God rather than man while Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes said, Let him (President Aquino) charge all of us bishops, priests, religious, all the faithful with sedition because it is better to obey God rather than men and immoral laws.

Meantime, former CBCP president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo called on the Catholic faithful to wait and see as he emphasized the need for both sides to be calm, reasonable and consider the moral aspect of the issue.

In the end, we must obey God and not man, he said.

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's caretaker government said on Wednesday it will prepare a law within a month to ease restrictions on building churches while banning protests in front of places of worship, after attacks on Cairo churches.

Formed after 15 people died when a Muslim mob attacked two Cairo churches on Saturday, the cabinet's justice committee said in a statement that it would "decisively stand against incitement to hatred and sectarianism."

The committee was tasked with "studying the project of unifying laws for the construction of places of worship, to be completed within 30 days."

This Easter the Archdiocese of Anchorage welcomed 83 converts into the Catholic Church. Some of these men and women hail from backgrounds that were hostile to the teachings of Catholicism.

THE CHALLENGE

As they tell it, Nicholas Myhre, Jason Yonk and Vanessa never pursued Catholicism. Rather, they were stunned at how their quests for spiritual truth led them to the very church about which they’d been warned.

Myhre’s mother, an agnostic Lakota Sioux, rejected organized religion and taught him that the Catholic Church forcibly indoctrinated the Natives in early America.

Catholic leader fears Islamic takeover in Egypt

Egypt, Catholic Culture - A spokesman for Egypt’s small Catholic community has appealed to international leaders to support the country’s existing military regime, in order to prevent a takeover by Islamic fundamentalists.

Father Rafic Greich, the press officer for the Egyptian Catholic hierarchy, told the AsiaNews service that the situation for all Christians is “very critical” in the wake of widespread sectarian violence in Cairo. Police have closed down the capital, hoping to curb the violence, in which militant Muslims have attacked Coptic Orthodox churches. While no Catholic churches have yet been attacked, all Christians face an unsettled future, as Islamic fundamentalists show their rising power.

The “Arab spring” uprising that led to the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak was primarily a secular movement, Father Greich says, but the leaders of that movement have not made any subsequent impact on the national political scene, while Islamic groups like the Muslim Brotherhood have moved to augment their power.

Damascus, Syria, (CNA).- Patriarch Gregorios III, the Syria-based head of the Melkite Greek-Catholic Church, is warning Western leaders not to encourage the revolutions currently shaking up the Middle East.

“Our Arab countries are not ready for revolutions, and not even for democracy of the European kind and model,” the patriarch explained in a recent letter to Western leaders. “I am asking the West not to encourage revolutions unconditionally here and there in the Arab world.”

In the patriarch's native Syria, government forces have killed hundreds of protesters in response to continuing mass demonstrations.

Muslims Attack Christians in Egypt, 12 Killed, 232 Injured

(AINA) -- Christians Copts in the area of Embaba were attacked Saturday evening by Muslim Salafis. The attacks lasted for 14 hours. The Muslims fired guns and rifles and hurled Molotov cocktails at Coptic churches, houses and businesses. 12 Copts were killed and 232 injured.

The church of Saint Mina church was the first to be attacked. According to its pastor Fr. Abanoub the attack started at 5.30 PM on Saturday May 7, when church parishioners noticed a large number of Salafis, estimated at 3000 men, congregating near the church. Anticipating trouble, the army was called. The Salafis went to the church and asked to search it because they believed a Christian girl named called Abir, who had converted to Islam, married a Salafi and wanted to revert back to Christianity, was hiding inside the church. The Muslims circulated a rumor that the husband of Abir received a call from her asking him to save her as she was being "tortured" inside the church.

At least 6 dead in Egyptian sectarian violence

Egyptians gather as firefighters extinguish a blaze at a church following clashes at another church between Muslims and Christians in Cairo on Sunday.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- At least six people were killed and 120 injured in sectarian clashes outside a church in Cairo on Saturday, officials said.

A group of Muslim Salafists attacked the Saint Mena Coptic Orthodox Church. Gunfire rang out as people sprinted for cover.

"With my own eyes I saw three people killed and dozens injured," said Mina Adel, a Christian resident. "There's no security here. There's a big problem. People attacked us, and we have to protect ourselves."

Egyptian Interior Ministry spokesman Alla Mahmoud said in a statement that six people were killed and 120 injured.

He said the clashes were sparked by reports of a Christian woman who married a Muslim man and was allegedly being held inside the church.

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's military rulers said on Sunday that 190 people detained overnight in connection with deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians in Cairo will face a military trial.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which has ruled Egypt since a popular uprising toppled president Hosni Mubarak, ordered "the transfer of all those arrested in connection with (Saturday's) events, and they number 190, to the Supreme Military Court, as a deterrent to all those who think of toying with the potential of this nation."
