On Sunday mornings in South Africa churches across the country are packed with the faithful. In one neighbourhood in Cape Town, parishioners make the journey to the local church. Devoid of a steeple and surrounded by a white picket fence, the church exudes an unassuming air. Donning their Sunday best, worshippers file into the church, passing under a large seal emblazoned with the words Iglesia ni Cristo.

To anyone casting a casual glance, the phrase might be in Latin, a common enough occurence in many churches. Closer observation reveals something surprising: the writing is not in Latin, not even in Spanish - it’s Tagalog, the main language of the Philippines. Inside, the Southeast Asian hints are even more visible - the preacher leading the congregation is Filipino; one of many who have travelled to South Africa (and beyond) to spread the good news.

Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) - or the Church of Christ in English - is a sect from the Philippines that has set its sights on global expansion, with Africa seen as a key growth market. Despite being relative newcomers to Africa, back in the Philippines, the INC is a force to be reckoned with, boasting millions of followers and wielding considerable ecclesiastical and political power. The first INC congregation in South Africa was founded in 1977 by Rogelio M. Rafals, a doctor with the UN Development Program. Initially seeking out fellow Filipinos in the area, Rafals eventually received permission from the INC back in the Philippines to minister to the local population as well.

By 2015, the INC had a presence in nine African countries, with that number jumping to sixteen just a year later. 2018 has seen further rapid growth, with INC General Auditor Gilcerio B. Santos Jr. stating that “we’re sweeping both Northern and Southern Africa as we reach out to INC members and non-members alike.” Whereas the activities of Iglesia Ni Cristo look like yet another wave of foreign missionary work in Africa, the INC’s controversial reputation makes their expansion into Africa of particular concern.

Iglesia Ni Cristo and the personality cult of its Executive Minister

In order to understand the INC’s background and why its overseas expansion is viewed with suspicion by some, we need to leave Africa for the time being and return to the Philippines. The brainchild of one Felix Y. Manalo, the INC came into being in 1914 with Manalo as the church’s executive minister. INC teaching exalts Manalo as God’s last messenger, and that only members of the Church will be saved come the Rapture, for (in the INC’s view) all other Christian denominations have watered down Christ’s teachings.

“It’s comforting to know that we have salvation already promised because we are part of [Iglesia Ni Cristo],” says Johannesburg INC member Jabulile Mbonambi. “If I was told tomorrow that I have to go to a very deserted area just so that I could be a part of anything to do with the Church, it doesn’t matter. I won’t even think twice. I’ll just go because my membership mean my life to me.”

MANILA, Philippines – Citing threats to his life, Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) has granted refugee status to expelled Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) member Lowell Menorca II. 

Rappler on Friday, January 26, obtained a redacted copy of the Canadian authorities' decision on Menorca's case. Canada's CBC News reported on the same decision on Thursday, January 25.

I was sent the attached graphic earlier today as I was going to preach on Philippians 2:5-11 at a local Southern Baptist Church here in Rapid City before returning home tomorrow to Phoenix. Here is the English translation that was provided to me:

After the heated debate between Dr. James White and Joe Ventilacion of INC, Dr James White has made up his mind to study more on teachings and faith of the Iglesia ni Cristo. This is due to the fact that he has by himself witnessed that all the teachings of INC is plainly stated in the Bible.

No wonder that even if the debate was already over, James White, out of his curiosity, continues to ask questions to Joe Ventilacion, because it was his first time to hear these teachings from INC. Most importantly, Dr. White has concluded that there is no Trinity in the Bible and that there is only one God, the Father, which has to be known and worshipped by men."

The picture was taken by an INC member we had chatted with while waiting for Mr. Ventilacion to arrive for the 5pm Q&A session (which was very lightly attended). As I had other things to get to I went straight to JV and asked my question. If we need to, I can provide a full transcript and recording of the conversation. Here is what we discussed:

When I do debates, I attempt to accurately represent the other side by studying their primary source documents. Hence, when I debate Mormons, I have a very large LDS library from which to quote. Same with Jehovah's Witnesses. When I debate Islam, I quote from their primary source documents as well. And when someone wants to represent me fairly, they surely can do so, as my books are available for anyone to read, and the confessions of faith used by my church are public and readily available.

During our debate, JV said I was misrepresenting INC. But he also invited me to do a second debate (we discussed doing this in San Diego next year during this conversation). So I raised one main issue to him. There is a book I would like to obtain. It is titled _Fundamental Beliefs of the Iglesia Ni Christo_ by Eranio G. Manalo. It is their primary ministerial text. And it is secret. They do not allow public distribution of it. And so I was asking for a copy, as that would be the only way to accurately represent INC's positions in a debate. I was told it was only for ministers, and that I would be provided with articles from magazines, but not with the official publication that defines their beliefs. I pointed out that this secretive stance is not only problematic for people who claim to be Christians, but it makes it next to impossible to fairly debate INC. But I was not given the book.

JV and I exchanged numbers and email addresses so we can have contact regarding the possibility of a debate in San Diego (where he is moving). I wrote to JV earlier today to ask him to comment on this falsehood being spread through the Internet, but I have not received a response from him.

Now, the fact is, whoever posted this lie is engaging in CLASSIC cultic behavior. Such a person shows not the slightest concern for truth and is willing to fabricate falsehoods for the service of a false religious system. This is the very essence of the cultic mind.

Once again, everything in the article is an utter fabrication, a lie, *and we possess full documentation of every word spoken in the exchange by which we can prove this.* Only a person who feels a very strong need to do damage control would produce such a dishonest post. And that says a great deal.

AFP: Philippine sect building massive indoor arena

Getting the right facts is what the Press people's credibility in news reporting! AFP says the Iglesia ni Cristo is a "sect" and was "founded in 1914" by a "Filipino Felix Manalo" whose church "does not disclose the exact number of its membership, but it claims to have millions of followers" where " aspiring politicians scramble to get the approval of its ministers during elections".  Amounting to US$175 million, the bill of the project was again held in utmost secrecy by the INC.

A politically influential Christian sect in the Philippines said Thursday it had started building one of the world's biggest indoor arenas with a seating capacity of 50,000.

The 74,000-square-metre (796,000-square-feet) mega-structure called the Philippine Arena is part of Iglesia ni Cristo's Ciudad de Victoria, a sprawling complex being built just outside the capital Manila.

"It is going to be twice the size of the biggest indoor arena in the United States," the church said in a story broadcast on its own television station and filmed during the project's ground-breaking ceremony last month.

In comparison, it said, the Madison Square Garden in New York could only sit 20,000 people, while the Staples Center in Los Angeles has a capacity of 21,000.

Designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous, construction is being carried out by South Korea's Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp. and is expected to be completed by 2014 to mark the church's centenary.

The church said it planned to use the arena for religious gatherings.

The complex around it will include a university, a convention centre, a medical facility, housing units and a chapel.

The arena itself will cost 175 million dollars, although the bill for the entire project was not revealed.

Founded in 1914 by Filipino Felix Manalo, who left the Catholic church over differences in beliefs, the sect has grown to become one of Asia's biggest indigenous Christian organisations.

More Filipinos -- particularly Roman Catholics, the poor and the youth -- consider Christmas more important than Easter Sunday, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey made exclusive to BusinessWorld.

The SWS survey, fielded on March 4-7, found that 57% of adult Filipinos chose Christmas compared to the 36% that favored Easter Sunday when asked "In your opinion, which between the two is the more important day for you? (Christmas or Easter Sunday)"

Here is the deal. You can't preach truth by deception. I'd like to think that the owner of http://readmeinc.blogspot.com is a HIDING Iglesia ni Cristo minister. See for yourself how he defended his religion in an Question-Answer style (like the Catholic catechism) without citing any official pronouncements from the Iglesia ni Cristo Administration in Central.

The reason why I am saying this is because, in the Catholic Church of Christ, one cannot simply express his/her personal opinion without citing the official position of the Church so as not to fall into a serious error. Preaching about Christ is not about "WHAT I THINK" but it the proper attitude should be "WHAT THE CHURCH THINKS". The Church is NOT about me but it's about ME in the Church.

READMEinc should be someone. The way he catechize his blog followers suggests he has a special position in the the Iglesia ni Cristo by his AUTHORITATIVE tone in his Q-A "catechism" style.

I would like to think that READMEinc's answers are "authoritative" and therefore they are considered "official" position of the Iglesia ni Cristo. Unless being sanctioned for heresy. Here are some:

From 33 AD until the Reformation in the 12th Century to Martin Luther, there were group of people who were called "Christians", WHO WERE THEY? See WHO DEVIATED from the Original Church?

Let's take these recorded events in history from Timeline of Christianity! Let me highlight these historical facts in RED color!

Shortly after the Death (Nisan 14 or 15) and Resurrection and Great Commission and Ascension of Jesus, the Jerusalem church was founded as the first Christian church with about 120 Jews and Jewish Proselytes (Acts  1:15), followed by Pentecost (Sivan 6), the Ananias and Sapphira incident, Pharisee Gamaliel's defense of the Apostles (5:34-39), the stoning of Saint Stephen (see also Persecution of Christians) and the subsequent dispersal of the church (7:54-8:8) which led to the baptism of Simon Magus in Samaria (8:9-24), and also an Ethiopian eunuch (8:26-40). Paul's "Road to Damascus" conversion to "Apostle to the Gentiles" is first recorded in 9:13-16, cf. Gal 1:11-24. Peter baptized the Roman Centurion Cornelius, who is traditionally considered the first Gentile convert to Christianity (10). The Antioch church was founded, it was there that the term Christian was first used (11:26).

I am so happy that you recognize the influence of the Catholic Church in the Philippines in improving its economy.  I would like to think that without the Catholic Church perhaps Filipinos may have been another Sudan or Ethopia whose main existence relies on foreign donations.

He said that I am quoting articles from other faith that contradicts my belief. It is a childish thing to think that because I quote an article from other faith, means that I am supporting also their whole beliefs. I wonder what wisdom these Iglesia ni Cristo Manalo have by thinking that the "churches of Christ" (which they DELIBERATELY changed to Proper Noun "Iglesia ni Cristo") mentioned in Romans 16:16 WAS THEM? What kind of brains do they have that a 1914 cult was MENTIONED in the Bible which was written almost 2000 years before Felix Manalo founded their cult?  Pure hallucination? Or a pure DECEPTION?! July 30, 2009 The name of the "CHURCH" that was established by Christ Oh, I didn't realized that the official name of the Catholic Church was in Spanish-tagalog accent (lol) "Iglesia (small letter) katolika apostolika romana".  I wish to see where you get all those information.   There are many religions that claims that the name of their church was the true church established by Jesus Christ or god or whatsoever. (The Catholic Church never claimed to be the "True" Church because in FACT, it IS the TRUE CHURCH established by Christ says facts of HISTORY.  Early Christians stand as witness to this fact. Those who claim so were the fake ones who just came later in the 20th Century. You Iglesia ni Cristo Manalo is included! Well, lets find it out what is really the name of the church that is founded by Jesus Christ by looking up to the bible. First, what did Jesus said to his church? Wow this is exciting. Doing 'Public Service' on the 86th birth anniversary of Brother Eraño Manalo leaves a bad taste to me. Helping out people in Maharlika Village, Taguig City. Robin hood? 46 new ministers ordained in the local congregation of Tondo means nothing since the membership of INC is decreasing for the past years. The political nature of the Iglesia Ni Cristo cult has already showed its effect to the Filipino people. The event of ordination was shown on different locales of Iglesia Ni Cristo. One of the ministers who were ordained was Brother Angelo Eraño Manalo, son of the current Executive Minister Brother Eduardo V. Manalo. It is expected that Brother Angelo Eraño Manalo will take over in the event that Eduardo Manalo will suddenly die just like Eraño Manalo. It is a religious Dynasty of the Manalo family inside the Iglesia Ni Cristo cult. Felix Manalo > Eraño Manalo > Eduardo Manalo. It appears that Angelo Eraño Manalo is now preparing his way to take over the family tradition.

Napansin niyo na ba ang mga kulay na ito na nakikitang NAKADIKIT sa likod ng mga kotse, truck, tricycle, bikes, bag ng mga estudyante, IDs, billboards, restaurants, parlors, business establishments, stores atb?

Lagi pong MINUMUNGKAHI ng mga kaanib ng IGLESIA ni MANALO na dapat daw MAGSIYASAT ang bawat isa upang "MASUMPUNGAN" daw ang katotohanan sa kanilang iglesia.  At DAPAT daw na ang bawat pagsisiyasat ay naaayon o GALING sa BIBLIA.

At dahil tayo'y pinapaalalahanang MAGSIYASAT sa KATOTOHANAN, hindi niyo ba naitanong sa inyong mga sarili kung ano nga ba talaga ang KAHULUGAN o MEANING ng mga kulay na GINAGAMIT nila  bilang bagong SIMBULO ng IGLESIA raw na TUNAY?!
