The House opposition’s “Legitimate 8” is now the “Magnificent 7.”

An independent minority faction in the House of Representatives initially composed of eight lawmakers has lost one of its key members to President Duterte’s “supermajority.”

Sagip party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta “is applying for membership” in the majority, according to Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, a member of the opposition faction that supported the bid of Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat to be minority leader in July.

“Though we’re no longer the ‘Legitimate 8,’ now we’re the ‘Magnificent 7,’” Lagman told the Inquirer.

Asked why Marcoleta left, Lagman said the party-list congressman informed him that he was joining the majority coalition at the request of the Iglesia ni Cristo, a highly influential religious group known for voting as a bloc.

Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas confirmed the move, but said Marcoleta had given him a different reason.

“I received a letter from him asking me to accept him in the majority pursuant to our rules,” he said.

“The reason he cited was he had realized that his advocacies were more aligned with those of the majority,” said Fariñas, also the chair of the powerful committee on rules.

He clarified, however, that Marcoleta’s transfer was not yet final. “Even if the authority is with me to act on his request, out of courtesy to the Speaker [Pantaleon Alvarez], I’ll consult with him first,” he told the Inquirer.

Lagman said he was not too upset by Marcoleta’s departure from their bloc, whose members have been critical of President Duterte and his policies.

“Even though we lost a member, we are still recognized as the real minority,” he said, noting that Minority Leader Danilo Suarez “is not being critical” of the administration at all.

The other members of their “magnificent” group are Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano, Capiz Rep. Emmanuel Billones, Akbayan Rep. Tomasito Villarin and Northern Samar Rep. Raul Daza.

Except for the party-list lawmakers, Baguilat, Lagman and the three others belong to the former ruling Liberal Party (LP) whose numbers have been decimated by Mr. Duterte’s PDP-Laban, now the dominant force in the chamber.

Twenty-eight LP members led by former Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. have joined the administration bandwagon, a multiparty coalition that has been touted as Mr. Duterte’s supermajority.

"THE Department of Justice (DOJ) has dismissed the criminal complaints against the leaders of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) for lack of probable cause.

In two separate resolutions, the DOJ dismissed the separate complaints of expelled INC Minister Isaias Samson and expelled INC member Jose Fruto against the members of Sanggunian, the INC’s highest administrative body.

In dismissing Samson’s complaint, the DOJ said the “complainant failed to offer proof that he was compelled to do something against his will when he was allegedly forced by respondent to execute a written statement admitting his culpability and complicity in the Ebangelista blog.”

The DOJ added that Samson failed to present an “iota of evidence” on his allegation of intimidation and confiscation of his passport, service vehicle, laptop, mobile phone and other personal effects.

'There is nothing in the recitation of facts made by complainant which show that respondents resorted to threat, violence and intimidation when the said articles were taken allegedly upon orders of the Sanggunian,' the resolution stated..."

Dear Ka Eduardo:

I am respectfully addressing this letter to you as a fellow Filipino citizen and because you are the Iglesia ni Cristo’s executive minister, an honored and responsible position you have held since Sept. 7, 2009.

I am writing about events happening in Metro Manila that involve the INC:

• On Aug. 28, INC members blocked or took over portions of EDSA in a mass demonstration that defies explanation and which paralyzed Metro Manila’s main avenue. The demonstration at EDSA-Shaw continues today, Aug. 29.

• On Aug. 27-28, INC members also held a mass demonstration at Padre Faura – obstructing traffic and affecting operations of the Department of Justice, the University of the Philippines Manila and the Philippine General Hospital, among others.

• Today is already the third day of INC mass demonstrations in Metro Manila and no official higher than the INC spokesperson has come out to explain to the public why.

• Based on the application for a permit to rally filed by Bro. Erano Codera at the Manila City Hall, the plan is to hold more demonstrations until Sept. 4.

Ka Eduardo, as executive minister of INC, you have a moral obligation to the nation to give a frank and honest explanation for these mass demonstrations. These cannot start, continue and end without your knowledge and consent.

 

Perhaps after you speak, civil authorities led by President BS Aquino, DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, PNP Chief Ricardo Marquez, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino and concerned mayors would finally end their inaction over the paralysis at EDSA.

Ka Eduardo, with all due respect, is this about the complaint filed by Isaias Samson and others? The filing of a complaint is a legal recourse available to any aggrieved Filipino citizen, regardless of faith, and the government is duty-bound to act on it. We ask you to use your moral power to enjoin those who may be summoned by authorities to cooperate in the legal processes. Let the accusers and the accused face themselves, answer the charges and defend their innocence in a process that everyone would help make sure would be open, fair, free and without fear or favor. We need not belong to the same faith to hold on to a universal belief: The truth shall set the innocent free.

Ka Eduardo, please come out and tell us if there is anyone or any party trying to take advantage of the complaint to either get concessions from the INC or to unduly influence the INC’s voting preferences, ahead of the 2016 elections.

Ka Eduardo, we respect the right of all citizens to free expression, free assembly and religious freedom. Our national heroes, whose memory we commemorate this weekend, fought for these rights. We ask you to honor these same rights for everyone else.

Ka Eduardo, please come out and dispel the rising fears that the INC demonstrations are meant to pressure the premature dismissal of a pending complaint. Please come out and ask church members to respect journalists, critics and other citizens – and to not make threats or engage in any act of violence. Please come out and call on your church members to help authorities restore the free flow of persons and vehicles at EDSA. Please come out and tell the nation your side of the story – because your silence has only given way to misinterpretations and prejudgments against the undeclared objectives of the demonstrations and even the beliefs and public record of your church.

Ka Eduardo, your church is not at all defenseless and helpless. The INC has its own media network, capable of broadcasting your message on TV, radio, cable and the internet. You can easily come out and face the nation. Any delay dishonors your church and harms the solidarity we supposedly share as a nation

Let me close by saying: We may not share the same faith, but we share one nation and one citizenship. Whatever our differences, we are all Filipinos. Ka Eduardo, please come out, show moral leadership and put your trust in fellow Filipinos. We are eager to hear your side, and to see you directly lead your flock as the presiding minister of a mature and responsible 101-year old church rooted in a country we all share.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo Debacle: A Four-Point Critical Analysis by Justin Joseph Torres

(Firstly, before this essay is judged to be anti-Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) and before I am hated by my INC friends, I would like to point out that my only post regarding the INC prior to this was to ask prayers for them that God brings them back to unity. It was what our shepherds (pastors)told us to do. Archbishop Socrates Villegas called Filipino Catholics to pray for the INC at this time of turmoil. I have never stopped praying for them and reaching out to some INC people who are very close to my heart.

But allow me to give my thoughts about the issue and my aim is to join the intellectual discourse (if ever such exists). Apart from being a Catholic, I was also a student of Philosophy and History. I rendezvoused with secular thought, existentialism and psychology and joined many discourses about religion and society in various contexts.

To my Facebook friends in Australia, please pardon me if this post intrudes your Facebook timeline; please understand that I posted this not for you but for my Filipino friends. It’s one of those things that you ought to do for your countrymen, and I’m sure you would understand.)

Christians are called to be ‘prophetic’. To be a prophet is to be able to speak the truth no matter how it hurts for the people hearing it. A prophet may be extolled by history, but the present will always despise him for speaking the truth.

The recent issue involving the INC is something which other Christians especially Catholics cannot be silent about. And sometimes, it is an act of love to point out what is wrong for people you consider as brothers and sisters. And I think this is where I want to begin: do the Iglesia ni Cristo think of other Christians as their brothers and sisters?

1. Love thy Neighbour; Love thy Enemies

Yes, I am aware of many hateful posts against the INC, many of them from Catholics. But the INC have to appreciate as well, that many other Catholics have remained respectful of the INC. When Eraño Manalo passed away, some Catholic and Protestant Church leaders even paid respect to the leader of this religion. But have the INC regarded Protestants and Catholics as their brothers and sisters? Have you ever heard an INC member say, “mga kapatid nating Katoliko” or “mga kapatid nating Protestante”? Aren’t Catholics and Protestants especially their leaders deemed as worshippers of Satan (kampon ni Satanas).

Catholic Response To The Iglesia Ni Cristo Rallies

What do we Catholics do as our brothers and sisters of the Iglesia ni Cristo throng around the EDSA Shaw area?

We, your bishops, offer you these guidelines:

1. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING for a peaceful and just resolution of the present dispute, in a manner both pleasing to God and in conformity with the democratic convictions enunciated in our Constitution.

2. BE CHARITABLE AT ALL TIMES AND IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. Jesus, the Lord, willed His disciples to be known by their love. No Catholic should fan the flames of dissension by rumor-mongering and by inflammatory statements. Let all be kind in disposition, respectful in speech and prudent in action.

3. SEEK ENLIGHTENMENT. We appeal to our Catholic lawyers, jurists and law professors to contribute to the on-going discourse in a constructive manner, without condemnation. We seek to be enlightened on what the fundamental law of the land provides, the boundaries of the freedom of religion and the rights and the prerogatives of State.

4. RESPECT HOLY SITES. The EDSA Shrine is a Catholic center of worship. It is a church. There is a Catholic priest assigned to it. We ask that all respect the sacred character of the Edsa Shrine.

5. ABIDE BY THE LAW. Unless it is convincingly shown that a law offends moral precepts, obedience to the law is a Christian duty. Sons and daughters of the Church cannot be less observant of the law than other citizens of the Republic.

6. NO TO OPPORTUNISM. No politician should gain political ground by abetting dissension or, worse, fostering disregard of the Constitution and the law. Neither is it morally correct for any political party to aim at gaining an advantage by controlling a religious sect known to propose to its members a chosen set of candidates.

If we turn to the Lord in sincere prayer, then, we are firm in the faith that all wounds shall be healed.

‘Mukhang guilty’: Dismissed Iglesia Ni Cristo minister slams picket of believers outside DOJ

Politics.com - The camp of dismissed Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) minister Isaias Samson Jr. sneered at the rally held by members of the church identified with the camp of Sanggunian head Ka Glicerio Santos Jr. outside the Department of Justice (DOJ) Thursday afternoon.

Samson’s counsel, Atty. Trixie Cruz-Angeles, said the rally reeks of “irrationality and non-responsiveness” since it happened at the heels of the former minister’s decision to file a case against Santos and the rest of the Sanggunian, a council of ranking church officials, for illegal detention.

“Instead of answering the allegations at preliminary investigation, they immediately call out the Department of Justice officials as being biased, based solely on their perception that the mere docketing of the case at the main office is already proof of said ‘selective justice.’ And instead of seeking recourse with the courts, they resort to what they think will be the equivalent of public pressure,” Cruz-Angeles said.

INC Pandora’s Box: Top 6 allegations against Ka Eduardo

Iglesia Ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo “Ka Eduardo” Manalo’s official declaration on 23 July 2015 to expel his mother, Cristina “Tenny” Villanueva,his two brothers Felix Nathaniel or “Angel” and Marco Erano, and sister Lolita or “Lottie” did not come as a surprise to the millions of members of the religious sect founded by Manalo’s grandfather, Felix Y Manalo, in 1914.

The schism and purge at the INC had gripped the INC community for months through the blog site, Iglesia ni Cristo: Silent No More, which is managed “Antonio Ramirez Ebangelista” who the Inquirer described as a “deep throat” in the inner sanctum of the organization which turns 101 years old on the same day the President makes his final State of the Nation Address.

Here are the juicy stuff from the Pandora’s box opened by AE:

1) Alleged abduction and torture

The blog site claimed that three long-serving Iglesia brothers were abducted and tortured to force them to spill the beans on who were behind the group fomenting dissension among the INC faithful. Ebangelista also claimed that at least 9 other INC ministers were picked up by Central Office goons from their homes and brought to Camp Karingal in Quezon City. The INC has denied these as mere allegations.

2) Extravagant lifestyle of INC officials

The blog site exposed how ministers under Ka Eduardo’s watch suddenly living a lavish life with their purchase of bigger houses, luxury cars (such as BMWs and Lamborghini) , and expensive bags and other accessories.

3) Bad investment decisions

The conscience group claimed that the INC acquired two helicopters and an Airbus under Ka Eduardo’s watch. Ka Eduardo also pursued the construction of the mammoth Philippine Arena in Bulacan even when the cost has ballooned to $200 million.

4) Fire sale of INC properties

The blog site enumerated properties sold by Ka Eduardo including rest houses in Baguio and Tagaytay, tracts of land in the United States, and a prime property along Roxas Boulevard close to Pagcor City. The INC has defended the sale of these assets claiming that these were idle and that the money could be used for other needs of the INC.

5) Money-spinning ministers

The blog site also made allegations that members of Ka Eduardo’s inner circle had controlled lucrative contracts in the religious organization including the production of uniforms and exclusive concessionaire contracts in INC events..

6) Creation of political liaison office

When Ka Eduardo took over in 2009, he restored the ‘political liaison’ office allegedly under who allegedly served as the go-between the INC and the politicians who want to take advantage of the sect’s bloc voting members.

Teddy Raval.

According to Mr. Antonio Ebangelista, Ka Glicerio "Jun" Santos, the "Feeling Executive Minister" and the General Auditor of the Iglesia Ni Cristo®, who "has extolled himself to the level of the Executive Minister" who is the one "who summons the District Minister, approves the release of [INC™] Church funds, the purchase of properties, the selling of properties, making the lessons for the worship services, programs for Missionary and Edification", is the one "talking to politicians and placing brethren in government positions" now a reality! Ochoa lobbied for INC-backed official's plum appointment at BOC- sources

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa reportedly pushed for the appointment of a Customs official allegedly backed by Iglesia ni Cristo to a lucrative post within the bureau, sources told GMA News. 

According to sources, Ochoa tried to get resigned Customs Commissioner John Phillip Sevilla to appoint Teddy Raval as head of the Bureau of Customs’ intelligence service. 

Sevilla specifically mentioned what he saw are suspicious circumstances surrounding Raval’s appointment as an example of the political pressure that prompted him to quit his post.

“Walang ibang dahilan na binibigay para sa appontment ni Attorney Raval,” he said when he announced his resignation last Thursday. "Malakas ang tulak na ma-promote sa matataas na posisyon sa Customs.” 

"Kapag nangyayari ang ganyan, pinu-push ang ganyan, ako ay nagdududa sa kanilang motivations,” Sevilla added. 

Raval, who previously headed the BOC’s Intellectual Property Rights Division prior to becoming the intelligence services head, reportedly enjoys INC’s support. 

Sources said Ochoa attempted to course Raval’s appointment through a deputy Customs commissioner but the official told him to go to Sevilla, who refused.

Mr. Glicerio Jun Santos is rumored to be the illegitimate son of Felix Manalo according to one blogger.

I am not sure if the Jun Santos my source was referring to is the same with the Brother Glicerio B. Santos Jr., the Auditor General of the Iglesia ni Cristo. The source said that the Jun Santos, the auditor general of INC lives in a mansion in Kalaw, Tierra Pura Subdivision. 

If the INC auditor general Jun Santos is really a son of INC founder Felix Manalo, this means that Jun Santos and Eraño Manalo have the same father, they are brothers. This would also mean that the INC auditor general Jun Santos is uncle of the current INC executive minister Eduardo V. Manalo."

Tax-Payer's Money Used to Greet the INC 100th Foundation Anniversary

I share the views of Mr. Efren C. Carag who corageously pointed out the huge tax-payers money being used during the 100 Year Founding Anniversary of the INC of Manalo. This article was from Philippine Inquirer Online

On LGUs’ enviable recognition of INC
Nine pages of the July 27 issue of the Inquirer contained greetings to the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) on its 100th founding anniversary, including one on full page from the Office of the Mayor of Manila! Wow! These were in addition to such greetings in the earlier issues of the Inquirer, including INC’s less than one-fourth-page acknowledgement of the greetings.

The Inquirer was not the only media outfit that ran or aired such greetings. Billboards and tarpaulin sheets printed with words of felicitations for the religious sect could be found in every available nook and cranny of Metro Manila and, of course, Bulacan, where the INC has built a multibillion-peso multipurpose complex. There must have been a lot more of these messages in the rest of the country. Nagkakandarapa ang mga tao na bumati sa INC. (People are scrambling to greet the INC.)

As a Catholic, I cannot but envy the importance accorded to the INC. I am now a septuagenarian and I do not recall the Catholic Church being the subject of recognition of such breadth and scale, let alone in paid advertisements in the Inquirer.

As a Filipino, I lament the attention given to the INC. That the organization is a vaunted political force and influence is a given. Without doubt or question, the advertisers wish to be assured of the continuing vote of INC members to perpetuate them, their family, their children, their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren in power.

Such is just one part of my grievance.

My other concern is the source of funds used to pay for the publication and/or printing of the greetings. Most likely, it was the city, province or political unit; more specifically the Filipino people, with the taxes and exorbitant fees they pay for government services.

By the way, I do not take issue with the Inquirer’s multipage feature article on the INC in last July 27’s issue. I respect our constitutional guarantees on the freedom of religion and freedom of the press. What I cannot countenance is the implication from all this: how distant we still are from political uprightness and integrity.

Taxpayer sues PHLPost over Iglesia ni Cristo postage stamp

MANILA, Philippines—A taxpayer has taken legal action against the Philippine Postal Corp. or PHLPost for its issuance of postage stamps marking the 100th founding anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo, saying that public funds should not be used to benefit a religious group.

Renato Peralta of Las Piñas City filed for injunction last week in the Manila Regional Trial Court to stop PHLPost, a government-owned corporation, from paying for the printing of the INC centennial postage stamps and to stop their distribution.

“Coming up with the commemorative stamp of the INC is tantamount to sponsorship of a religious activity” which is prohibited by the Constitution, Peralta said.

Reached by the Inquirer for comment, Peralta said he was a court employee and a member of a Christian group. He said the issue was the use of public funds when “there is no legitimate government activity.”

There will be a hearing on July 4 at Branch 33 of the Manila Regional Trial Court, he said.

Understanding the ‘Catholic vote’

(Source:Opinion Inquirer) Many people will liken the notion of a “Catholic vote” to the alleged bloc vote of the Iglesia Ni Cristo. First, we must explain what it is not. The Catholic vote is not a bloc vote according to the dictates of the clergy. It would not be acceptable for the bishops and priests to dictate whom to vote. All this would be very alien to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Catholics are united in what the “Magisterium,” or the teaching authority of the Church, teaches regarding faith and morals. The true mark of Catholicity is this unity in matters of faith and morals combined with great respect for individual freedom and responsibility in temporal matters. Since politics is concerned with temporal matters, Catholics are free to use their own criteria, keeping in mind the common good.

Thus, the decision process of a Catholic is two-tiered: The top tier is the criteria for matters that have to do with faith and morals, and the lower tier is concerned with temporal issues. Before Republic Act 10354, there was never any need for a Catholic vote: Legislation was exclusively concerned with policymaking on temporal matters regulating civil life. The situation changed completely with the introduction of the reproductive health bill—a policy that impinged on the sacredness of human life and the sanctity of marriage. The Catholic vote was born in the hearts of the faithful as they helplessly listened to politicians they elected cast their votes in favor of RH.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI says: “When the Church addresses her social teaching to issues of the common good, she has no intention of giving the Church power over the State or to impose on those who do not share the faith ways of thinking and modes of conduct proper to faith.”

The Iglesia Ni Cristo turns 97 today, with members gathering on different days of the week in their respective places of worship for thanksgiving worship.

In Sydney, thousands of INC members gathered Saturday July 23 at the Sydney Town Hall to commemorate the occasion, this website has gathered. Members in other states are also reported to hold separate gatherings in their capital cities.

The first INC Australian congregation was established in Sydney in November 1976 with a handful of INC faithfuls holding worship services in Sydney’s YMCA Hall. The Sydney congregation has since moved to Carlingford, giving “birth” to eight other congregations in Metro Sydney.

The religious group, currently headed by Executive Minister Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, has congregations in 96 countries and territories including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga.

Two years ago, the Philippine government enacted Republic Act 9645 designating July 27 of every year as Iglesia Ni Cristo Day. The Act decrees the observance of the INC’s foundation day as a national holiday in recognition of the founding anniversary of the Iglesia Ni Cristo in the Philippines.

Thanks to Manila Bulletin for saying it correctly. The Iglesia ni Cristo emerged in the Philippines in 1914 was founded by Felix Manalo! Just as "San Miguel Corporation" cannot be translated to "Saint Michael Corporation" the INC name will always be in tagalog form "Iglesia ni Cristo" for this is how it was registered as a Trade Mark-- a corporation sole! Their name cannot stand alone without it's Tagalog registration name! Proudly Philippine-Made!

The petition to disqualify Ong from the Sandiganbayan, now pending in the Pasig Regional Trial Court, was filed by lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, who happens to also be an Iglesia counsel. According to the grapevine, Ong caught the ire of the Iglesia hierarchy after the Sandiganbayan justice convicted military colonel Victor Danao, husband of Pilar Manalo, who happens to be a sister of Iglesia Executive Minister Erano Manalo....

Iglesia Ni Cristo is very much involved in Philippine politics. I will not believe if INC is not endorsing, pushing or making any moves for the Ombudsman position for INC member Tuquero. What can be the consequences if INC member Tuquero will be assigned as the new Ombudsman?

• INC and Gloria Arroyo are close political Allies.
Our dream of putting Arroyo behind bars may remain as just a dream.

• Government official, another INC member, LTO Chief Virginia Torres is facing a lot of charges. Persecuting Torres maybe going to be hard.

I am not impressed to INC members holding public offices. Congressman Marcoleta, NBI Chief Wycoco and Gatdula, LTO chief Virgie Torres, former DOJ secretaries Cuevas and Tuquero did nothing impressive on their positions. Iglesia Ni Cristo doctrines state that all of us are going to Hell; only INC members will be reaching heaven. I doubt that the former and present INC government officials are all going to heaven. I highly doubt that only INC members are good enough to please the eyes of Our Creator. Eduardo Manalo, can you please shed a light on this? We are all in total darkness in here. If the block voting of Iglesia Ni Cristo is indeed biblical, then how come that Mar Roxas lost as Vice President when INC endorsed him in 2010 elections? Eduardo Manalo, you continually disappoint me.

Government office is a public trust and we do not trust Iglesia Ni Cristo.

To the Executive Minister of Iglesia Ni Cristo, Eduardo Manalo:

I still see you as an incapable leader that hides in the shadow.

You still do not have the nerve and the bravery to come out in the open to lead your flock in spiritual enlightment, not with this kind of political maneuver to seal the INC presence in political arena. Why are you silent about the INC and the ombudsman impeachment in Congress? Why are you silent about the mess of an INC member in LTO? I think you are just lucky enough to inherit the INC leadership when your father died.

Warning: Iglesia Ni Cristo is dangerous to Philippine politics

I will withdraw my support to President Noynoy Aquino if he will pick Tuquero as the next Ombudsman.

We are ready to support the Bills on Reproductive Health as long as there would be no immoral elements in them. What are the moral aspects of the proposed bills that we support? We believe that it is moral imperative for parents to watch over all their children and provide them with food, shelter, and clothing, as well as proper education and religious and moral training. Hence, parents todayhave (sic) a moral obligation to plan the number of their children and keep it under control. The Bible states that a parent who does not provide for the needs of his own household is worse than an unbeliever (I Tim. 5:8). Since modern methods of contraception—by preventing married couples from having any unplanned pregnancies—assist in supporting this Christian principle, we support their use as long as these methods are empirically not abortifacient. Abortion and the use of abortifacients involve the taking of life, which God explicitly forbids (Exod. 20:13). We do not support the natural family planning method and all its variants. These so-called birth control methods depend upon abstinence on the part of the married couple when the woman is fertile but allows marital relations only when she is not. These methods are not only unnatural and ineffective but they also are immoral, since they contradict the commandment that God has given to married couples. The Bible instructs married couples not to deprive one another of intimate marital relations for long, extended periods of time; further, any abstinence at all for a married couple is supposed to be with the mutual consent of husband and wife and not for the purpose of preventing pregnancies (I Cor. 7:3-5).
