Catholic Church better at retaining faithful than other churches, study finds

The Church has the highest retention rate of any denomination, but the lowest rate of conversions

English and Welsh Catholicism in 2016 is a religion mainly of cradle Catholics, according to a new study.

The report finds that 3.8m people in England and Wales identify as Catholic, while 6.2m say they were raised Catholic.

This means Catholics have the strongest retention rate of any Christian denomination in England and Wales – 55.8 per cent of cradle Catholics still identify as Catholic. But the Church also has the lowest rate of conversions: only 7.7 per cent.

The figures come in the first report issued by the Catholic Research Forum, a new initiative of the Benedict XVI Centre at St Mary’s University. The forum aims to provide “academically rigorous and pastorally useful" research.

The report, authored by the centre’s director Dr Stephen Bullivant, is based on data from the British Social Attitudes survey (BSA).

Bullivant told the Catholic Herald: “However depressing our retention stats are, they’re actually the strongest of the main denominations. To put it a bit crudely, it’s a “losing game" for everyone, but we’re doing something less catastrophic than others."

It offers a statistical picture of Catholicism broken down by region, age, ethnicity, frequency of Mass attendance and several other categories. It also provides a broader account of religion in England and Wales, showing that the fastest-growing churches are those outside the Anglican Communion or the Catholic Church, and that nearly half the population (48.5 per cent) say they have “no religion".

According to the report, the Catholic population has remained steady over the last 30 years, and is now 8.3 per cent. By contrast, the proportion of the population identifying as Anglican has slipped from 44.5 per cent in 1983 to 19 per cent in 2014.

A common theory is that this is down to immigration. The report finds that, according to the BSA’s categories, there are more people of “Black (African origin)" among the Catholic population than among the general population. The same goes for “Asian (other)", a category which includes Filipinos and Vietnamese.

After a radical conversion to Christ at the age of fifteen I lived as a genuinely devout Protestant, earnestly seeking after Christ in my life as best I could.

Sometimes, of course, doing a miserable job.

This Easter, after a long journey, I’ll become a Catholic.

My journey began when a Protestant pastor—himself on a journey towards a more ancient faith—asked me the question, “What’s more important the Bible or tradition?”

My answer was typically Protestant, “The Bible, of course.”

“But who put the Bible together?”

That was the tradition of the Church, of course—the thought came as a bit of a revelation.

I was subsequently set on a journey that lasted nearly a decade. A journey which introduced me to a podcasting priest, some Catholic friends, and even saw me attending Mass a couple of times. But Catholicism held no great appeal to me, at least not until I began to read.

I began to read about Catholicism from authors who were actual Catholics, instead of reading about what Protestant authors thought, or thought they knew, about Catholicism. I found out in a hurry that much of what I knew about Catholicism (from the Protestant sources I’ve read, and from the few Catholics I’d met) was inaccurate, to say the least.

If I’d known what Catholics really believed, I would’ve become Catholic a lot sooner.

I first read my way into the Church through authors like Louis Bouyer, Pope Benedict XVI, Scott Hahn, Stephen Ray, and G.K. Chesterton.

Remember when that one fake local church's followers founded by fallible man in 1914 claimed that the number of Catholics worldwide was shrinking, proof of that was the "many" church's properties being sold in the United States alone? Remember that arrogant pronouncement of Eduardo V. Manalo during INC's Centennial inauguration suggesting that the INC has been winning over more Roman Catholic Church members?

But of course THEY LIED.  The Catholic Church is growing-- very fast. On the contrary, they themselves cannot even prove their number is steadily growing, instead mounted  vast earthly wealth but sadly and painfully with LESSER "worshipers".

World’s Catholic population approaches 1.3 billion as African, Asian numbers soar

Between 2005 and 2014, the world’s Catholic population rose from 1.115 billion (17.3% of the world’s population) to 1.272 billion (17.8%), according to statistics made public by the Holy See Press Office on March 5.

During that time period, the Catholic population soared by 41% in Africa and 20% in Asia, approximately double the rate of population growth on each continent (23.8% in Africa, 9.6% in Asia). During the same time period, the Catholic population increased by 11.7% in North and South America, 2% in Europe, and 15.9% in Oceania.

In 2014, nearly half (48%) of the world’s Catholics lived in North and South America. 22.6% lived in Europe, 17% in Africa, 10.9% in Asia, and 0.8% in Oceania.

Between 2005 and 2014, the number of priests increased from 406,411 to 415,792, while the number of permanent deacons rose from 33,000 to 44,566. The number of priests rose significantly in Africa (by 32.6%) and Asia (by 27.1%), which declining in Europe (by 8%). 97.5% of permanent deacons live in North America, South America, or Europe.

Despite substantial gains in Africa and Asia, the number of religious brothers worldwide decreased from 54,708 in 2005 to 54,559 in 2014, while the number of religious sisters fell by 10.8% to 682,729.

The worldwide surge in the number of seminarians that began in the papacy of St. John Paul II has crested, as numbers rose from 63,882 (1978) to 114,439 (2005) to 120,616 (2011), and then fell to 116,939 (2014). Between 2005 and 2014, the number of seminarians soared in Africa (by 30.9%) and in Asia (by 29.4%) but plummeted in Europe (by 21.7%) and declined in North and South America (by 1.9%).

The statistics come from the 2016 edition of the Annuario Pontificio and the 2014 edition of the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae, both of which will soon be released.

More Than One Thousand New Converts are Added to the Catholic Church in Singapore!

Singapore is an island nation that is found in the Southeast Asian region. It's population is estimated to be 5.5 million as of October 2015. And out of that 4.8% of them are Catholic (that's roughly 276,750 members, but according to the archdiocese official website, Catholics are estimated to be around 360,000), and still growing this Easter when the Church will baptize more than 1,000 new converts according to the Archdiocese of Singapore, to the Glory of God!

So who says the Catholic Church is dwindling? :) This is the ONLY CHURCH OF CHRIST, He established ONLY ONE CHURCH on earth! Whoever says HIS CHURCH apostatized completely are LIARS. People apostatize, NOT THE CHURCH for "the gates of hell shall not prevail" (Mt. 16:16-18) ever!

Over 1000 Singaporeans joining Catholic Church this Easter

The Archdiocese of Singapore is preparing 1,227 candidates to join the Catholic Church at Easter this month. 498 non-Christians seeking Baptism and 68 non-Catholics seeking full communion with the Catholic Church participated recently in the Rite of Election of the archdiocese's Christ the King Church parish. At the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, there were 393 catechumens and 33 candidates. A Chinese Rite of Election also was held on Feb 21 at the Church of the Holy Trinity with 133 catechumens and two candidates. The Rite of Election that closes the period of the catechumenate or preparation, includes enrollment of names. Archbishop William Goh said there was a 17 percent increase in the Rite of Election over the previous year.

Father Erbin Fernandez, archdiocesan catechetical director, told the archdiocesan newspaper CatholicNews that through their courses, workshops and formations sessions, they were encouraging catechetical groups to come together to pray as communities as well as to work with others in the parish in the areas of evangelization and discipleship. Church gained 15 million Catholics in a year, say researchers

Study reports that there were 1.23 billion faithful worldwide at the end of 2012

Membership of the Catholic Church grew by 15 million in a single year, according to new statistics.

The Fides news agency published the figures, which are based on the latest edition of the Church’s Book of Statistics, which covers the period up to December 31 2012.

Fides said the number of Catholics worldwide increased in 2012 to 1,228,621,000, a rise of 15 million on the year before.

The greatest increases were in the Americas and Africa, but the Church also grew in Asia, Europe and Oceania, Vatican Radio reported.

Catholics comprised 17.49 per cent of the world population in 2012, Fides said, a decrease of 0.01 per cent on 2011.

The number of priests in the world increased by 895 to 414,313, but the number in Europe declined by 1,375. Meanwhile, the number of women religious worldwide fell by 10,677 to 702,529.

According to the study, the Church runs 71,188 preschool centres, 95,246 primary schools and 43,783 secondary schools around the world, as well as 115,352 charity and healthcare centres.

1. Christianity is growing by leaps and bounds worldwide.

The research shows Christian numbers rising, not falling worldwide. "Christianity should enjoy a worldwide boom in the coming decades, but the vast majority of believers will be neither white nor European, nor Euro-American,” writes Philip Jenkins of Baylor University, author of The Next Christendom.

In America, this will mean that as white descendants of Europeans fall off a demographic cliff, they will be replaced by the growing Southern Christian and Catholic populations.

2. Nominal Christianity is dead—and that’s a good thing.

Meanwhile, in America, research showing that Christian numbers are tanking is a little misleading. What it really shows is a fall in the number of people who call themselves Christians but have never darkened the door of a Church. We no longer feel we have to dishonestly mark the “Christian” box, and we now feel it's okay to be honest and mark the “atheist” box—but this shows health rather than weakness.

It is an interesting dynamic: In the West, the nominal Christianity that was inherited unthinkingly is disappearing and in the East and South, real Christianity is a rapidly growing grassroots movement. Books like God's Century by Monica Duffy Toft of Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and God Is Back by John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge of The Economist are trying to figure out what that will mean.

(Vatican Radio) The number of Catholics in the world has increased with growth registered across all five continents. The figures are taken by the Fides news agency from the latest edition of the Church’s Book of Statistics updated to 31 December 2012. These show that on that date the number of Catholics in the world stood at 1,228,621,000 with an overall increase of more than 15,000,000 compared to the previous year. The Americas and Africa registered the biggest increases followed by Asia, Europe and Oceania. The world percentage of Catholics stood at 17.49 %, a decrease of 0.01% compared to the end of 2011.

The total number of priests in the world increased by 895 to 414,313. Europe once again registered the largest decrease (-1,375) followed by the Americas (-90) and Oceania (-80). In Africa the number of priests grew by 1,076 and in Asia by 1,364.

There was an overall decrease in the number of women religious worldwide, whose numbers dropped by 10,677 to 702,529. Once again Africa and Asia showed increases whilst Europe and the Americas showed the biggest decrease in the number of women religious.

The number of lay missionaries in the world is 362,488 with an overall decrease of 19,234.

In the field of education, the Catholic Church runs 71,188 kindergartens, 95,246 primary schools and 43,783 secondary schools. Charity and healthcare centres in the world run by the Church are 115,352.

ROME REPORTS - During Sunday's Mass, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that the Church celebrates World Mission Sunday and the love that Blessed Paul VI had for the evangelization.

"And this exhortation is still relevant, it's very relevant! It is important to consider this aspect of Paul VI's pontificate, especially today, when we celebrate the World Mission Day”.

The World Mission Day was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 as a way to renew the Church's commitment to spreading the Gospel.

On the occasion of the celebration, the Pontifical Mission Societies has released statistics on the situation of the Church's mission around the world.

The report, which is based on data collected on Dec. 31st, 2012, states that of the 7 billion people in the world, more than 1.2 billion are Catholic. Those numbers indicate an increase of 15 million Catholics since last year, the highest increase coming from the Americas with 6.5 million Catholics.

The report also states that while there is an increase of Catholics in the world, the overall percentage has experienced a slight decrease of 0.01%. However, the percentage of Catholics in America and Asia have increased by 0.12% and 0.01%, respectively.

While the Pontifical Mission Societies stated there are decreasing numbers of religious and missionaries, the number of priests has risen by 895, for a total of 414,313 worldwide.

The statistical report concluded stating that the Church continues to thrive in the field of education, with over 60 million students in primary and secondary schools as well as universities. The Catholic Church also boasts over 115,000 charitable and healthcare institutions.

(VIS/Vatican Radio) Looking ahead to Pope Francis’s Apostolic Journey to the Republic of Korea from 13 to 18 August, the Vatican Press Office has released statistics regarding the Catholic Church in the South Asian nation.

The statistics date from 31 December 2013 and are provided by the Central Office of Church Statistics.

The Republic of Korea has an area of 99,268 square kilometers and a population of 50,220,000, of whom 5,393,000 are Catholics, corresponding to 10.7% of the population. There are 16 ecclesiastical circumscriptions, 1,673 parishes and 843 pastoral centers. The apostolate is carried out by 35 bishops, 4,261 priests, 516 male religious and 9,016 female religious, 123 lay missionaries and 14,195 catechists. There are 395 minor and 1,489 major seminarians.

There are 328 educational centers of all levels directed or owned by the Catholic Church throughout the Republic of Korea, in which there are 221,020 students, as well as 49 special centers. There are also 200 health and welfare centers belonging to or directed by the Church: 40 hospitals, 4 clinics, 9 leper colonies, 513 rest homes for the elderly and disabled, 277 orphanages and nurseries, and 83 centers for family counselling and the protection of life.

This is far more bigger than the Dome in the Philippines dubbed as the world's biggest. Truly, the Catholic Church promotes Christ and His Church while the fake INC^® promotes the REGISTERED TRADEMARK IGLESIA NI CRISTO^® and the MANALOS.

Catholic converts on the rise: East Tennessee among nation's top 10 growth areas

Times Free Press - There was the man inspired by the written words of Pope Francis. There was the agnostic professor. And there was the widow of a Baptist preacher.

All of them Tennesseans, and all of them recent converts to one of the world's oldest Christian faiths.

In the South, Catholicism is growing. The Diocese of Knoxville was recently ranked among the top 10 in the nation for its rate of adult conversions.

All Southeast Tennessee Catholic parishes, including Chattanooga's, fall under the umbrella of Knoxville's diocese, one of 195 in the United States. A diocese is a geographic collection of parishes grouped together under the governance of a bishop. And many of the dioceses producing the most converts to the church are right here in the South, according to a recent study by Georgetown University's Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.

Rates of Catholicism have always been strong in the Northeast and Midwest. But not in the protestant-heavy South.

So it's no wonder that Catholicism is growing faster here.

Like Quebec, Ireland, or Boston, Spain has epitomized the fading of Catholic faith. In the twentieth century, religious practice in Spain fell sharply, especially as the country transitioned to democracy and resentment of the Church’s support for Franco’s dictatorship surfaced.

Recently, however, the downward trend has stopped and is recovering. According to Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS), the proportion of Spaniards attending Mass has increased from 12.1 to 15 percent between 2011 and 2012. In absolute terms, the number of Spanish Catholics attending Mass weekly grew by an astonishing further 23 percent between 2012 and 2013, according to CIS. Meanwhile, between 2007 and 2013 the number of Spaniards contributing part of their taxes to the Church rose from eight to nine million.

Not only are Spaniards attending Mass more frequently, but also youths are rediscovering the priesthood and religious life. In 2013–2014, the number of Spanish diocesan seminarians increased for a third consecutive year to 1321, a steady growth from 1227 in 2010–2011. Active female religious orders are also vibrant—each year, about 400 Spanish girls become non-cloistered sisters, a slowly increasing number. The number of women at the Poor Clares Convent of the Ascension in Lerma has surged from 28 in 1994 to 134 in 2009. One of the Lerma nuns, Sister Verónica, created her own community, Jesu Communio. The Vatican approved the rapidly growing order, known as the “sisters in jeans” because they wear denim habits, in 2010.

Immigration cannot explain this growth in monastic and priestly vocations. Today, young Spaniards are leaving the country for the more prosperous parts of Latin America (especially Chile) and for Germany and Britain. Considering Spain’s massive youth emigration and the fact that the country has one of Europe’s lowest birth rates, Spain’s youth population is shrinking, so this vocations rebound is more impressive.

Perhaps no one puts a more attractive face on Spain’s return to Catholicism than Olalla Oliveros. Last month, the 36-year-old Spanish model stunned Spanish society by becoming a nun of the semi-cloistered Order of Saint Michael. Perhaps Oliveros did this out of frustration? On the contrary, she was at the height of her career and was recently offered a lead role in a big-budget film. Oliveros experienced a conversion several years back and made her decision after much thought.

Some would dismiss these recent developments as resulting from the economic crisis. Currently, unemployment in Spain is almost 27 percent; in the European Union, only Greece suffers from a worse jobless rate. Spain plunged into recession in 2008, with anemic GDP growth in recent quarters. Perhaps Spaniards are rediscovering the pews and seminaries because economic hardship is leading them to look for a last resort in religion?

Who says that the Catholic Church is dwindling in the West?

RALEIGH, N.C. — Few could have imagined back in 1924 that the newborn Diocese of Raleigh would take root in the soil of North Carolina and become a Catholic powerhouse in the nation’s South.

Ninety years later, and rapidly expanding, the diocese is home to the only Catholic cathedral currently under construction in the United States, a testament to the vibrancy of its people’s faith.

Bishop Michael Burbidge announced the construction of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral at a press conference in May.

Noting the rapid growth of the diocese, the bishop said it is his “hope, dream and prayer to build a mother church, to build a cathedral” to replace the existing Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Raleigh.

Sacred Heart Cathedral has a capacity of 320 people and was originally completed in 1924, when the Catholic population of the state was just 6,000. Today, however, the cathedral has burst its seams, serving a parish base of 3,000 Catholics in a diocese that is home to almost half a million Catholics, or 4.8% of the state’s population.

“We have people literally out in the street,” the bishop said, pointing out that Christmas and Easter celebrations see typically 13-14 Masses, with overflow locations at the cathedral-school basement and local Clarion hotel unable to serve the influx of worshippers.

Bishop Burbidge told reporters that the cathedral helps the bishop “gather the faithful of the diocese to worship as one.”

More people than ever before are now coming to the Lord. According to statistics published Statistical Yearbook of the Church, which reported worldwide Church figures as of December 31, 2012, the worldwide Catholic population had reached 1.228 billion. This represented an increase of 14 million, or 1.14 per cent. This slightly outpaces the global population growth rate, which, as of 2013, was estimated at 1.09 per cent.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Furthermore, the number of priests, permanent deacons and religious men all increased in 2012, while the number of women in religious orders continued to decline, according to Vatican statistics.

However, the number of candidates for the priesthood also showed its first global downturn in recent years.

Catholics as a percentage of the global population remained essentially unchanged from the previous year at around 17.5 per cent.

It's estimated that there were about 4.8 million Catholics that were not included in its survey because they were in countries that could not provide an accurate report to the Vatican, mainly China and North Korea.

The percentage of Catholics as part of the general population, according to the yearbook, is highest in the Americas where they make up 63.2 per cent of the continent's population. Asia has the lowest proportion, with 3.2 per cent.

There were 16.4 million baptisms of both infants and adults in 2012, according to the statistical yearbook. The number of bishops of the world stayed essentially the same at 5,133.

Both diocesan and religious priests internationally grew from 413,418 to 414,313, with a modest increase in Africa, a larger rise in Asia, and slight decreases in the Americas, Europe and Oceania. Asia saw a 13.7 per cent growth in the number of priests between 2007 and the end of 2012.

One area that showed growth was in the number of permanent deacons reported. The figure of 42,104 deacons was an increase of more than 1,100 over the previous year and a 17 per cent increase since 2007. More than 97 per cent of the world's permanent deacons live in the Americas or in Europe.

However, the number of women in religious orders continued its downward trend. The total of 702, 529 temporarily and permanently professed sisters and nuns in 2012 was a 1.5 per cent decrease from the previous year and a 5.9 per cent fall since 2007.
