Prominent atheist says Catholicism is least tolerated religion in Europe

Madrid, Spain, (CNA).- Bernard-Henri Lévy, a well-known atheist associated with what is considered to be the European left, said in an interview that Catholicism is by far the most attacked religion in Europe. The prominent intellectual also noted it was unfortunate that so many injustices are committed against Benedict XVI.

“The Pope’s voice is extremely important,” Levy told Spanish newspaper ABC this week. “And we are very unjust to this Pope. I am not Catholic, but I think there is prejudice and especially major anti-clericalism that is taking on enormous proportions in Europe.”

“In France there is much talk about the desecrations of Jewish and Muslim cemeteries, but nobody knows that the tombs of Catholics are continually desecrated,” he added. “There is a sort of anti-clericalism in France that is not healthy at all. We have the right to criticize religions, but the most attacked religion today is the Catholic religion.”

Levy said he supports the construction of the mosque at Ground Zero and is opposed to the use of burkas, but he said Catholicism suffers more attacks than Islam. “Muslims are defended in the intellectual world, but Catholics much less,” he underscored.

I really cannot understand why extremist and Muslim activists can freely chant "Death to the Pope" in UK while quickly condemn anyone who exercizes his/her freedom to say "Death to Muslims", not even the halted "Burn the Quran" spared the lives of innocent victims in Islamic states around the world.

Choudary should be lectured on the historical facts why such Crusades did occur in history. Let me say this. It was because Muslims drove Christians out from the Middle East and spared no one until the sack of Jerusalem. Muslims attacked Christian pilgrims that prompted Christians to protect the Holy Land from "moors".

Of course there were abuses that happened but the late Servant of God Pope John Paul II had apologized for all the mistakes we as a Church did in the past. (Read Crusades from Wikipedia).

Now, it's HIGH TIDE for Muslims to apologized too.

Islam Meets Catholicism as Muslim Protesters Call for Death of Pope Benedict

Though the Crusades were fought centuries ago and are rarely, if ever, mentioned in Catholic classrooms, Muslims today who want Jihad continue to flaunt them in vengeful tones and wallow in hatred for Catholicism. So it was when Pope Benedict XVI visited the United Kingdom and was met on his itinerary by a group of angry Islamists urging for his death and calling him “responsible” for the Crusades.

Muslim demonstrators shouted “Pope Benedict, you will pay, Islam is on its way”, “Sharia is on its way”, “Justice is on its way” (a lot is coming our way, it seems) and threatened that Sharia would be “declared” against all who insult Muhammad. They shouted to the Pope, “Watch your back,” swore that he will “burn in hell” and claimed that he “deserves the death penalty.”

Anjem Choudary, who helped lead the protests, is the chief spokesman for Al-Muhajiroun, a fundamentalist Muslim organization based in England that was ostensibly “disbanded.” Choudary and fellow protester Abu Rayah, both participated in the burning of the American flag on the steps of the U.S. Embassy in London on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"After a short speech by an MAC spokesman, Abu Rayah, explaining that while they were “not against one hillbilly trying to burn the Koran, we are against the constitution that attacks Muslims every day”, the US flag was set alight. Some 50 protesters chanted: “Democracy, you will burn.”

"At the far end of the square, a very different spectacle was taking place. Under a wooden pavilion bearing the inscription “Peace is the price we pay for love”, in the British Memorial Garden grown after 9/11, a steady stream of people came to lay flowers and wreaths. Some were from the families of the 67 British people killed nine years ago. Others, such as John Watts, came to pay respects. Now 60, he lost his wife shortly after the towers fell: 11 September 2001 was his last wedding anniversary. His memories of it, like those of so many with no direct connection to the attack, are overwhelmed by what happened that day."

Ambassadors of genuine peace in the world, no matter their creed or station in life, are not recognized as such by those who hold to the core teachings of Islam, a so-called “religion of peace“, where “peace” is defined as living in “submission“.

The “meeting” of Pope Benedict XVI and Anjem Choudary on the streets of London, though the Pope was apparently oblivious to it, is most noteworthy because in it we see the personification of the two largest religions that are contradictory at their core. On the one hand, we have the Pope who stands as “Vicarius Christi“, the “Vicar of Christ” or “servant overseer” of Christianity to 1.147 billion Catholics in the world. To them, the Pope is the representative of the core teachings of the Christian Faith which are, if nothing else, peaceful in nature. On the other hand, Anjem Choudary is rightly characterized as one who both knows and professes the core teachings of Islam, a religion that recently surpassed Catholicism in membership and claims about 1.27 billion members worldwide.

Though all Muslims do not hold to Choudary’s views, only the blind or ignorant could sincerely claim that he misunderstands what Islam teaches. At the same time, though all Catholics do not hold strictly to the catechism, it is clear to all but the blind or ignorant that it, at minimum, professes a peaceful message and one that the Pope consistently promulgates as the Bishop of Rome.

Since devout Muslims refuse to forget the Crusades and are shouting death threats to the Pope, perhaps it is time to bring this chapter of Catholic/Muslim history back into the Catholic classroom. Catholic students may do well to understand what the Crusades were really about from Catholic history, not the revised version currently popular thanks to leftist apologists for Islam. We have not forgotten, as a Church, that the Crusades were defensive wars in response to Muslim atrocities which occurred after Islamists conquered what had been Christian lands. If Muslims refuse to forget the Crusades and want to continue stabbing forks into that wound, neither should we forget what they were really about.

Retired general confesses to burning mosque to fire up public

Turkey, (TodaysZaman) - A retired general who has recently been accused of having conducted an assassination attempt on the life of Turkey's eighth president, Turgut Özal, has inadvertently confessed that he ordered the burning of a mosque as part of psychological warfare operations in 1974.

In remarks published in the Haber Türk daily yesterday as part of an interview with Gen. Sabri Yirmibeşoğlu, who led the Special War Department in 1971 and also worked to mobilize civilian resistance during Turkey's military intervention on Cyprus in 1974, said: “In Special War, certain acts of sabotage are staged and blamed on the enemy to increase public resistance. We did this on Cyprus; we even burnt down a mosque.” In response to the surprised correspondent's incredulous look the general said, “I am giving an example,” in an attempt to clear things up.

The retired general is also believed to have wide-ranging information concerning many alleged crimes and activities of behind-the-scene organizations such as JİTEM. He was also implicated in the Sept. 6-7, 1955 pogrom in İstanbul against minorities, which today is widely believed to have been part of a manipulative plan concocted by Ergenekon-like structures. Yirmibeşoğlu has admitted that the Sept. 6-7 events were organized by the Special War Department, documented by journalist Fatih Güllapoğlu in his book “Operation with No Tanks or Arms.” In the book, Yirmibeşoğlu is quoted as saying, “Sept. 6-7 is the work of Special War [department], and it is a spectacular organization.” In the interview with Haber Türk, Yirmibeşoğlu also attempted to clarify this point. He partially denied what was in the book saying, “In 1971 I was assigned as the senior [head] of the Special War Department. At the time, there was actually no department called the Special War Department, there was only the Mobility Investigation Board that was set up for Cyprus.”

The confession brings to mind the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) coup plot, allegedly drafted by a clique in the military to undermine the government. Dozens of military officers were arrested, although most were later released during the investigation into the Sledgehammer document, which includes plans to bomb the Fatih and Beyazıt mosques and down a Turkish jet over the Aegean to fuel problems with Greece with the ultimate aim of discrediting the government.

When allegations regarding the Sledgehammer plan first arose after the document was leaked to the press earlier this year, then-Chief of General Staff Gen.İlker Başbuğ dismissed the accusations as nonsense. Başbuğ said a military whose troops are known for shouting “Allah Allah” as they attack the enemy could not possibly think of burning the house of God. However, Yirmibeşoğlu’s revelation shows that this has actually been done before.

Pope to young people, what counts is faith, not worldly "security"

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - What matters to young people, more than having "stability and security" is solid roots in faith, which offers prospects immeasurably greater in their scope than those which today's society tend to exalt, promising an almost " Heaven without God, "which in reality is a hell in which" selfishness, divisions in families, the hatred between people and between nations, lack of love, joy and hope prevail. " Hence the need to be " Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith ", the theme of the XXVI World Youth Day to be held 16 to 21 August 2011 in Madrid, in view of which Benedict XVI’s message was published today. A document which also contains the Pope's references to his own youth and his decision to become a priest.

“In every period of history, - he writes - including our own, many young people experience a deep desire for personal relationships marked by truth and solidarity. Many of them yearn to build authentic friendships, to know true love, to start a family that will remain united, to achieve personal fulfilment and real security, all of which are the guarantee of a serene and happy future. In thinking of my own youth, I realize that stability and security are not the questions that most occupy the minds of young people. True enough, it is important to have a job and thus to have firm ground beneath our feet, yet the years of our youth are also a time when we are seeking to get the most out of life. If I listen to him and walk with him, I become truly myself. What counts is not the fulfilment of my desires, but of his will. In this way life becomes authentic”.

“You are “planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith” (cf. Col 2:7). The Letter from which these words are taken was written by Saint Paul in order to respond to a specific need of the Christians in the city of Colossae. That community was threatened by the influence of certain cultural trends that were turning the faithful away from the Gospel. Our own cultural context, dear young people, is not unlike that of the ancient Colossians. Indeed, there is a strong current of secularist thought that aims to make God marginal in the lives of people and society by proposing and attempting to create a “paradise” without him. Yet experience tells us that a world without God becomes a “hell”: filled with selfishness, broken families, hatred between individuals and nations, and a great deficit of love, joy and hope. On the other hand, wherever individuals and nations accept God’s presence, worship him in truth and listen to his voice, then the civilization of love is being built, a civilization in which the dignity of all is respected, and communion increases, with all its benefits. Yet some Christians allow themselves to be seduced by secularism or attracted by religious currents that draw them away from faith in Jesus Christ. There are others who, while not yielding to these enticements, have simply allowed their faith to grow cold, with inevitable negative effects on their moral lives.

To those Christians influenced by ideas alien to the Gospel the Apostle Paul spoke of the power of Christ’s death and resurrection. This mystery is the foundation of our lives and the centre of Christian faith. All philosophies that disregard it and consider it “foolishness” (1 Cor 1:23) reveal their limitations with respect to the great questions deep in the hearts of human beings. As the Successor of the Apostle Peter, I too want to confirm you in the faith (cf. Lk 22:32). We firmly believe that Jesus Christ offered himself on the Cross in order to give us his love. In his passion, he bore our sufferings, took upon himself our sins, obtained forgiveness for us and reconciled us with God the Father, opening for us the way to eternal life. Thus we were freed from the thing that most encumbers our lives: the slavery of sin. We can love everyone, even our enemies, and we can share this love with the poorest of our brothers and sisters and all those in difficulty”.

Katulad ng paniwala ko, tumitibay ang isang salaysay kapag may mga SUMAKSI nito. Tulad na lamang ni Joseph Smith, wala siyang saksi na "tinawag" nga siya ng Dios para maging "Huling Propeta".  Tanging ang mga "SAKSI" raw nila ay ang mga nakakita sa "Golden Plates" daw na ngayon ay dinala na sa kalangitan.

Ganon din naman kay Felix Manalo, wala siyang saksi. Tanging SIYA lamang ang nag-PROCLAIM sa sarili niya bilang "Huling Sugo" o "ANGHEL" at pinaniwalaan ng ilang mga tambay sa Santa Ana.  Ang mga dilat ang mga mata ay hindi niya naakay. Maging ang mga magulang niya't kamag-anakan ay HINDI naging kaanib ng kanyang kulto.

Kung ang batayan pala ng pagiging Pilipinas ng "FAR EAST" ay kung ano ang dominant religion ng mga bansang nabanggit, eh para na ring SINABI ni readme na WALANG KWENTA ang Iglesia ni Cristo dahil hanggang ngayon ay MINORITY pa rin sila mula ng IREHISTRO ito ng kanilang SUGO noong July 27, 1914 bilang CORPORATION SOLE. Remembering Saint Father Pio of Pietrelcina

(Source: Catholic Online) - Francesco, named in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, was born to Giuseppa and Grazio Forgione, peasant farmers, in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina on May 25, 1887. From his childhood, it was evident that he was a special child of God. Francesco was very devout even as a child, and at an early age felt drawn to the priesthood. He became a Capuchin novice at the age of sixteen and received the habit in 1902. Francesco was ordained to the priesthood in 1910 after seven years of study and became known as Padre Pio.

On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of Church. The doctor who examined Padre Pio could not find any natural cause for the wounds. Upon his death in 1968, the wounds were no longer visible. In fact, there was no scaring and the skin was completely renewed. He had predicted 50 years prior that upon his death the wounds would heal. The wounds of the stigmata were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced by Padre Pio.

The blood from the stigmata had an odor described by many as similar to that of perfume or flowers, and the gift of bilocation was attributed to him. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of the penitents who flocked to him for confession which he heard for ten or twelve hours per day. Padre Pio used the confessional to bring both sinners and devout souls closer to God; he would know just the right word of counsel or encouragement that was needed. Even before his death, people spoke to Padre Pio about his possible canonization. He died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one. His funeral was attended by about 100,000 people.

On June 16, 2002, over 500,000 Padre Pio devotees gathered in Rome to witness Pope John Paul II proclaim Padre Pio, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. The Padre Pio Foundation and many benefactors traveled to Rome, San Giovanni Rotondo, Pietrelcina, Piana Romana and many other holy places to celebrate Padre Pio's Canonization.

Ayon sa nagtatagong ministro sa kaniyang blog na INC Defenders Online (daw) na may pamagat na "PAGHAHANDOG WAG IKATISOD" ilang ulit niyang sinabing ang Iglesia Katoliko ay "tuluyan ng BUMABAGSAK" na raw at kailangan nilang DAGDAGAN ang kanilang KONTRIBUSYON o ABULOY dumarami raw sila at kailangang BUMILI ng mga LOTE o mga bahay sambahan.

Marami pang napag uukulan ang mga abuloy, kung kaya wala tayong mababalitaan na may nagsarang kapilya dahil sa utang o anu pa man. O nagsarang kapilya dahil di makabayad ng kuryente at iba pa. Wala ka ring mababalitaang bahay sambahan na sira-sira sapagkat itoy hinihiling sa pamamahala upang iayos kung may mga diperensya na... Miscreants set ablaze church near Chowkandi

KARACHI: Anger and tension spread among Christians when miscreants in Shah Latif Town allegedly set a church on fire on Saturday. According to the police, they have registered FIR No 676/10 on the complaint of Priest Peter Shahzad against unidentified persons. The complainant in the FIR informed the police that some unidentified persons entered the church located near Chowkandi Graveyard, Sector 19-B in the Shah Latif police jurisdiction and torched it before fleeing. Several sacred and holy books burnt in the ensuing inferno hurting the sentiments of the local Christians. Following the incident a heavy contingent of law enforcers were dispatched to the area to avoid any law and order situation. However, no major incident or rioting was reported till the filing of this report.

Will any moderate Muslim stand up and condemn this?

Isn't it that's what exactly I am doing right now. I am relaxing on my bed while my message reaches you in the Philippines?

So why do I have to travel all the way to Philippines to seek an audience with one of your PAID ministers?

There's only one reason that could convince me doing that. If your minister's wisdom surpasses that of Solomon, then definitely, just as the Queen of Sheba risking her life by travelling from Yemen to Jerusalem seeking Solomon's wisdom, you may be seeing me perhaps with many secular and religious leaders flocking your Central's entrance gate for an audience. Sadly, that only happens during elections in the Philippines.

But here's the convincing part. Secular leaders and other religious leaders from Islam, Judaism, other Christian communities and non-Christian religions are found lining for an audience with the Pope, the successor of St. Peter, the apostle whom Christ built his Church promised that "the gates of hell SHALL NEVER prevail" against HIS CHURCH. They travelled thousands of miles just for an audience with an 83 year old man in the Vatican.

But look, when was the last time you say a cardinal or a pope or even just a priest debating with anybody? if the CC wants a debate or want to discus doctrines they send catholic defenders like keating or fernandez. Is there a video of them (your priests) debating? Or at least use verses to defend your doctrines? Give me a link to that video. our ministers are well trained in those feilds like theology. your priests use reason and just a little verses.

Well that's because we are Catholics by heart.

The Catholic Church is not the Iglesia ni Cristo-1914. Priests DO NOT control us.  We enjoy our God-given freedom. 

We don't need the approval of any priest or cardinal or the Pope for a debate. We do it on our own as CATHOLICS. Once you know what's Catholic and what's NOT then you can always engage yourself in a meaningful debate with the intentions of bringing souls back to the Church of Christ.

That's exactly what I am doing. I have no priest, or bishop, or cardinal or the Pope for approval. See the links I have provided in my blog? That's where I am getting my strength and my shield to protect the Church.

Catholic Defenders are LAY CATHOLICS. They are not like your PAID Ministers. They do it for free. Unlike your debaters, our Catholic Defenders are NOT PAID for debating. Unlike our debaters they got no incentive after a hard days work. They've got nothing. Not even a tap on the back. It's all done for Christ whom you are persecuting.

Sorry but our priests are busy helping the needy. Our own lay Catholic Defenders are well equiped. They can handle that. Our priests, bishops, cardinals are too big for your PAID Ministers. As I've said, it's unfair.

"Attack on Muslims"? Who is attacking Muslims? Who told you that I am "attacking Muslims"? You are putting words into my mouth. That's not fair Mr. Plaridel.

I am not attacking Muslims. The Catholic Church officially recognizes their faith. What I am critical of is extremism which I wish those who terrorize people wouldn't associate their terrorism with Islam. Unless no enough moderate Muslim stands against those "who malign" their religion then there would be more and more people who'd believe that terrorism is synonymous to Islam or vise versa. I am helping Muslims to eradicate that wrong notion but they need to help us too.

Going back to your rantings, the problem with INC-1914 members is that they believe everything is just an opinion. They DO NOT know when a statement is an opinion or when it is a fact.

Look, opinions they maybe, but the mere fact that it was PUBLISHED OFFICIALLY, then they ceased to be opinions. They become FACTS.

That's what I have done. I have quoted from official sources and that for me is a FACT. Your Ministers supported those facts I needed. Your own ministers damaged your own position in the INC-1914 for publishing their "opinions" in your Official Magazine.

Let me quote again your official magazine PASUGO July 1965, p. 12:

“Parehong-pareho ang espiritu ni Cristo sa diwa ni Kapatid na Felix Manalo sa pamamaraan ng pagdadala ng tungkuling tinanggap sa Dios." (In English: "The spirit of Christ is exactly the same with the soul (or spirit) of Brother Felix Manalo in a manner of bringing the duty (or role) they received from God.")

Where can we find that in the scripture? Can you please give us any Bible verse which says that Christ's role has to be shared with Felix Manalo?

Nor I can recall any instance that a Pope or any Catholic priest claimed that too. Not even his own apostles!

In fact, the Apostles boldly acclaim the greatness and superiority of Jesus for "he is Lord" and that they're not greater than the Master himself.div>

What was the duty of Christ he received from the Father?

That he's the MESSIAH. He will ransom his people from their sins. And that his own blood will be our perpetual offering for our own salvation.

And because of this, God highly exalted him and has given him a name which is above all names: That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father," says the Bible(Philippians 2"9-11)

See? Jesus's mission were recorded in the Bible. His name was written CLEARLY.

Where is MANALO's?

So where the name of Felix Manalo written in the Bible? What was his duty that he deserves any of the credit identical with that of Jesus had?

In Hebrews 9:14 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted unto God, cleanse our conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?"

Did it also happen to Manalo?

Let's see. According to their official magazine PASUGO May 1964, p. 1:

“Inihandog ng Dios ang kanyang sarili sa kanyang huling sugo upang dumiyos sa kanya. Samakatuwid, ang tanging may Dios na huling araw na ito'y ang huling sugo -- si Kapatid na Felix Manalo." (God offered himself to his last messenger so that he gain godhood in him.  Therefore the only person who has God in these last days is the last messenger--Brother Felix Manalo).

No, you are not accusing Catholics of being "idol worshippers". You are ACTUALLY asserting it as if it's our official teachings. But when you are asked to back up your asssertions you can't provide any. That is because WE DO NOT!

And don't bother to convert to the TRUE CHURCH OF CHRIST because in this Church salvation is surest once you follow Christ's teachings.

Why is that? Because we follow teachings from a Christ who is true God and true man.

Making Straight the Way: An Anglican Homecoming

When Father John Fleming converted to Catholicism in 1987, he couldn’t foresee that he would play an instrumental role in the request of the Traditional Anglican Communion for reunion with Rome in 2007, which in turn had a major impact on Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus in 2009. An Australian, Fleming was ordained an Anglican priest in 1970. He married in 1975, and he and his wife were already raising their three daughters when they both converted. After living as a Catholic layman for eight years, Fleming was ordained a Catholic priest in 1995. In this case, the rest really is history.

The Traditional Anglican Communion, which consists of 38 bishops representing some 400,000 faithful throughout the world, was established in 1990 to salvage traditional Anglicanism (conceived of as Anglo-Catholicism). From the first, the TAC was also deeply interested in reunion with Rome. At first its leaders pursued this objective by seeking to set up ecumenical talks between themselves and the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity. But there were Catholic divisions over how best to handle ecumenical affairs, and the Council for Christian Unity was reluctant to enter into talks with the TAC lest such talks harm ecumenical prospects with the far larger Anglican Communion.

It was a tough position for a relatively small but very significant Anglican group which has come to appreciate more deeply the need for papal authority as a result of the doctrinal and disciplinary disintegration of this same mainstream Anglican Communion. Still facing such reluctance in 2005 after nearly fifteen years of effort, Archbishop John Hepworth, Primate of the TAC, sought advice from an old friend—a Catholic priest and convert with the closest possible ties to Anglicanism, a leading thinker and strategist, and a man whom Hepworth had served as an Anglican parochial assistant in the mid-1980's: Fr. John Fleming.

Fleming’s advice was clear and pointed: Forget ecumenical talks, he advised. Don’t give the theologians or the ecumenicists anything to discuss. Just tell the Vatican you accept the primacy of Peter, believe everything in the Catechism, and want to be brought corporately into full communion with the Catholic Church, with your legitimate traditions intact, as soon as possible. Hepworth, and ultimately all the other TAC bishops, endorsed the new strategy. Their petition for incorporation (called “The Portsmouth Petition”), adopted in 2007, had the effect of putting the matter before the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, where it was well received by Cardinal William Levada. The petition also became a critical motive for Pope Benedict’s commitment to make provision for exactly this circumstance on a broader scale. Within two years, the Church issued the Apostolic Constitution which made the TAC’s incorporation possible, hopefully as the first of many similar initiatives to come.

This story is told by both Fr. Fleming and Archbishop Hepworth in the last chapter of Fleming’s new book, Convinced by the Truth: Embracing the Fullness of Catholic Faith. But the book, though fairly brief at 130 pages, is really something very much more. It is, first, the story of Fr. Fleming’s own conversion, and that of his wife Alison and their daughters, set against the disintegration of the Anglican Communion, and the growing realization that the Anglicans had no authority principle with which to preserve the Christian Faith. Along the way, in the third chapter (“Anglican Chaos—Self-Inflicted Wounds”), Fleming provides the finest succinct exposition I have ever seen of the problem posed by the ordination of women, which was the primary flashpoint for the crisis of authority among Anglicans.

Second, the book is a moving commentary on Catholic teaching about the Eucharist, which is ultimately what drew Fleming home to the Church. Fleming explains the sense in which the Mass is a sacrifice, and demonstrates that a proper understanding of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist does not contradict human reason. This chapter, directed at those still struggling with Catholic claims, is another of the book’s gems; it offers a remarkably lucid explanation of the Eucharist, and one sure to enrich any reader’s faith. Fleming’s prose is both warm and clear, and he handles theological and philosophical issues without either confusing the uninitiated or boring those who already know the answers.

These first two parts of the book more than justify the price of admission, but there is all that history as well—the moving story of the Traditional Anglican Communion’s quest for union with Rome. It is a history which gathers up all the prior personal and theological discussions as essential context, so that the reader understands not only the ecclesiastical strategies but also the intensely personal struggles which have now led so many Christian believers to thirst for Catholic unity.

Yet Fr. Fleming’s book is even something more than this. It is a sign of hope in an age in which both Catholicism and Christianity appear to be on the run, losing ground moment by moment, being swept onto the ash heap of history. The book reminds us that there is so much that we do not see, and that none of us can explain the explosive moments of grace which lead either to deeper conversion and renewal or to widespread Catholic growth. We must remember, for example, the limitations of our secular Western experience, for the Church is far more robust in the rising global south, especially in Africa (where, not incidentally, the TAC is also well-represented). But we also need to remember that the scandal of Christian disunity has been giving skepticism, agnosticism and atheism a leg up for nearly five hundred years, and that a resurgence of Christian unity would undoubtedly give them a corresponding leg down.

I recall Pope John Paul II’s optimism about a new springtime for the Church and about imminent reunion with the Orthodox. Some of us smiled then, but now we see on every side a dramatic improvement in Catholic-Orthodox relations. Even closer at hand, in the Anglican problem, we have something equally momentous. We have the very first religious body born of the Reformation to seek reunion with Rome. Is it not possible that what has begun as a trickle might end as a cataract? Clearly, the Holy Spirit is even now powerfully at work.

This review would be incomplete without my own personal note. If I were either a committed Australian Catholic or a student of the prospects for Anglican reunion (or, in fact, a bioethicist), I would undoubtedly have had many reasons to be aware of Fr. John Fleming’s work for quite some time. Among other achievements, he was the founding Director of the Southern Cross Bioethics Institute in Adelaide and the founding President of Campion College Australia, the nation’s first Catholic liberal arts college. He has also been a Corresponding Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life since 1996. As it is, I first learned of him in 2009 when he joined (and provided a picture for) our Rogue’s Gallery—a group of people who highly value this web site, and are more than happy to say why!

Opinion: What’s the difference? Media, The Koran Burning, and the Pope’s U.K. Visit

September 21, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – One can’t help but notice that religion is all the rage in the news these days. First there was the planned burning of the Koran on September 11 by a Florida pastor, and second, the visceral reactions by some British against the Pope’s visit.

Interestingly (but perhaps unsurprisingly) the reaction from the mainstream media has been rather different regarding these two stories: One is decried as an outrage, while the other is protected under freedom of speech.

This gives rise to an important question: What is the difference between Islam and Christianity? Why are journalists, and the majority of people for that matter, ready to rush to the aid of Islam, but they allow Christianity to be openly attacked?

It goes without saying that burning the Koran was a terrible idea, and there should have been an outcry against it. I may not believe the Koran is inspired, but many people do; and destroying something that many people love (though that love may be misguided) for no constructive purpose, is against charity. For the same reason, non-Catholics should be disturbed by the treatment the pope has received at the hands of certain members of British society. It is extremely offensive to Catholics when the Holy Father is abused so viciously by such as British scholar Claire Rayner, who recently referred to the pope as “this creature,” and said that she has “never felt such animus against any individual” (See previous LSN Coverage here)

Yet, despite the similarities between the two situations, they haven’t been treated alike at all.

For instance, after the burning of the Koran didn’t happen, CNN posted a story on its blog called, “Lessons from the Whole Quran Episode.” For the large part, the comments from the CNN writers who contributed to the post were dead-on.

Akbar Ahmed, a contributing writer and professor at the American University in Washington said, “We … learned how Jews, Christians and people of other or no faiths all categorically rejected the idea of burning the Quran as disrespectful and even harmful. In that sense, Jones' story had a happy ending, showing that there is such a thing as reason and compassion in the hearts of the high and mighty and the ordinary folk, which trumped hatred and bigotry.”

But last week CNN posted a story under a picture of the pope entitled, “Opinion: Why I Oppose the Pope’s Visit,” that does anything but advocate for “reason and compassion in the hearts of the high and mighty.”

The author, Peter Tatchell, the UK’s most prominent gay activist, says, “As a democrat, I defend the right of Pope Benedict XVI to visit Britain and to express his opinions. But people who disagree with him also have a right to protest against his often harsh, intolerant views.” But Tatchell’s defense of the remarks of Rayner, or Richard Dawkins (who has been hurling an endless stream of abusive epithets at the pope for months now) is a far cry from the media’s reaction to the burning of the Koran. When the abuse is aimed at a Christian figure, the media is happy to allow it in the name of free speech.

So again I ask, what’s the difference between Islam and Christianity that leads to this disparate treatment? The primary difference may be found at the very root of each religion: man’s relationship with God. One believes God can never be subject to anything outside himself, the other believes God’s willingness to be a servant to man and humiliated by him is what defines His identity as Love itself.

In Islam, God is all powerful. He is far beyond man’s grasp, and thus to attack him strikes against his nature. He is incapable of being subject to anything. Even depicting God is forbidden. This “untouchable” aspect of God is transmitted to Islam as a whole, making any offense against Islam, such as drawing the prophet or burning the Koran, incompatible with God’s nature.

The president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, expressed the Islamic view of God recently when he said, in reference to the planned Koran burning, “Humiliation of the holy book represents the humiliation of our people.” It is humiliation that cannot be tolerated. An all-powerful God cannot be humiliated; any attempt at humiliating him must be rejected.

Christianity, however, is built upon the greatest humiliation God could ever endure. No one sums this up better than St. Paul who describes Christ as he “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2: 6-11)

In Christianity, unlike Islam, God allows himself to be attacked. It is a religion where God allows all to touch him, in love or in hate. Those who approach Him out of love are invited deeper; those who approach Him out of hate only advance His will and face judgment in the end. But all are allowed to approach Him.

The media takes advantage of God’s humility and allows any and all to attack Christianity. Because he won’t come down from the Cross, the media is not afraid of the Christian God, not realizing they will one day face judgment for their silence in the face of such attacks, or, indeed, their complicity in them.

More importantly, they do not realize the attacks they are allowing only further the mission of the Church they often criticize. They forget that the Crucifixion comes before the Resurrection. The Pharisees wanted to get rid of Christ so they had him murdered, but this only advanced his mission. By aiding those who attack Christianity, the media does not realize it has taken the place of the Pharisees in furthering Christ’s mission in our day. It still has not learned the lesson of the Cross: that God brings redemption out of suffering, and victory out of defeat.

The view of God as one who “humbles himself and becomes obedient unto death” and the view of God as “unapproachable” are polar opposites. Surely, the religions that espouse each view will be treated differently by outsiders. One will be accepted as the target of criticism while the other will remain untouchable. However, as Christians we must have faith. Good Friday always comes before Easter Sunday.
